How to Apply for Medicare
If you're approaching age 65 or becoming eligible due to a disability, applying for Medicare is an important step in securing your health coverage. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to apply, and the process is easier than many expect.
Apply Online (Fastest Method)
The quickest and most convenient way to enroll is online through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Most people complete the application in 5–10 minutes.
To apply online, you’ll need:
- Your Social Security number
- Place and date of birth
- Information about any current health insurance coverage
- A secure “my Social Security” account
Apply by Phone
You can also apply by calling Social Security directly:
- Social Security: (800) 772-1213
- TTY users: (800) 325-0778
If you’re looking to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can also call:
- Medicare: (800) 633-4227
- TTY: (877) 486-2048
Apply In Person
You may also visit your local Social Security office to apply in person. This option is ideal for those who prefer face-to-face help or need to discuss complex eligibility situations.
When to Apply for Medicare
Most people are eligible to sign up during their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is a seven-month window that begins:
- Three months before the month you turn 65
- Includes your birthday month
- Ends three months after your birthday month
You may qualify for Medicare before age 65 if you:
- Have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months
- Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Have ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
